Letting the subject speak for itself.
I love breathing new life into materials that could tell me fascinating stories about people I've never met and places I've never been. Don't they deserve the chance tell the world that a life well lived means embracing each and every chapter as it unfolds? Well, at Joyful Hearts at Home, I walk side by side with these materials as they grace a new stage with their still-vibrant colors, their amazing soft touch, and their boundless energy.
When upcycling, as I do for my one-of-a-kind wool cardigans and wraps, I use thrifted sweaters and scraps from other crafters to pull together a fresh yet cozy design. For custom-made Christmas stockings and light upholstery projects, I source deadstock fabrics from high-end designers to create items that are both sustainable and luxurious at the same time. I want everything I make to feel amazing to your touch.
Hand-painted items receive all the love and kindness that acrylic paints can give, thanks to my ever-expanding collection of Chroma's Jo Sonja product line. The quality is amazing, which makes painting such a blessed experience for me. After careful surface preparation, I relax to some music and begin. Given my Norwegian heritage, I love creating rosemaling designs to brighten up the dark shadows of heavy furniture. Then, I like to protect painted wood surfaces with a durable clear coat, and tabletops are treated to a two-part epoxy finish - because it looks amazing, and because I'm a mom who likes an easy-to-wipe surface after meals!

Sometimes the creative spirit calls me to decoupage, an artform that I find relaxing, fun, and delightfully messy. ModPodge is very good at what it does. My favorite materials to use for decoupage include vintage advertisements from old magazines, catalogs, postcards and stamps, old sheet music, and even coasters. I also adore using decorative napkins because there are so many stunning patterns to choose from!
Whatever the creative outlet of the day, I cling to high-quality materials from sustainable sources whenever possible. I treat each item with intense care, knowing it will serve someone who will love it as much as my creative touch has.
